Making Memories: Road trip to the Rockies

Like us, if you love nature, wildlife and family road trips, you must try this one.
You'll remember it for a lifetime!

We started in Toronto, Canada and drove through the beautiful prairies to dinosaur country - Drumheller Alberta, and headed as far West as Mount Robson in the Canadian Rockies. Then South into the USA and back to Canada.
Many of you asked for our route map, here it is along with a few pictures (please click on the images for a larger image)

Total distance we drove was 9,805 kilometres in 12 days.

Ontario is so large, you can drive for two days, and you'll still be in Ontario

We saw these Moose near Salter Lake, close to Lake Superior Provincial Park

We didn't have a GPS. We used a road atlas instead (which I still prefer over any GPS)

These are Sandhill Cranes

Tell Doe ... crossing the highway isn't a good idea ...

And the fawn also crossed safely

This is where the dinosaurs roamed 75 million years ago

This place is filled with fossils

Fields of Canola flowers

Many of my friends said it would be boring to drive through the prairies ...
thankfully I didn't listen to them ☺
The most peaceful part of the entire road trip were the prairies!

Daybreak in the prairies ...

Pelicans on the Prairies!

First glimpse of the Canadian Rockies! It took us five days of driving to get here from Toronto. And it's been a childhood dream to see the Rockies

We saw several black bear, very close, but didn't manage to see any grizzlies

Lake Louise

I think Moraine Lake in the Valley of The Ten Peaks is way more beautiful than Lake Louise which is too crowded with tourists

Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep

Miles and miles of spectacular landscape

Indian paintbrush

This view reminds me of Psalm 91:1
"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty"

Athabasca Glacier -  There are some places I've been to that make me feel so insignificant in this universe. This is one. No photograph or movie can capture the expanse and beauty of this place. There is only one word that can describe this place.

Awesome!

Please click on the image below and see how small the people are ...
(Just gives me a sense of how insignificant we all are in the grand scheme of things)

Near Jasper, we saw three Elk swim across Talbot lake, and come over to our side, as if to meet and greet us

Covered in the clouds is Mount Robson, at 3,954 metres it is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.   This is where we turned around and headed back ...

We are 4,951 kilometres away from home!

After driving on mountain roads and past pristine lakes in the Canadian Rockies, we headed South into the USA.

One of my favourite drives:
Driving Going-to-the-Sun Road over the Continental Divide through Glacier National Park in Montana

Driving by the edge of the mountain

The Rocky Mountain Goat is only found in North America

Indescribable natural beauty ...

Saint Mary Lake

Having travelled through most of North and West Africa, India, and the Middle East, I must tell you, I haven't seen a place as fascinating as Yellowstone National Park.

As we were driving through Yellowstone, the traffic came to a standstill on a bridge. So I got out of the car to see why ...

This is the Yellowstone Bison

Largest mammal on land in North America (even the local cowboys moved over, got into their trucks and quietly gave way)

I've encountered wild elephants in India this close but I was on my motorcycle and could get away ...
but here on the bridge ...
I didn't even have the guts to keep the window down as it walked past by ... about 5 feet away!

I love Montana and Wyoming!

A Yellowstone Coyote

Yellowstone sits on top of one of the largest volcanoes on our planet ...

It is easy to appreciate how fragile the earth is when you see the activity in Yellowstone ... anything can happen at any time, and only GOD knows!

Blue mist ...

Back on the road through the prairies to South Dakota

By the way, he ...

... sculpted these ...

You may see politics, but I see art

The rest of the drive was thru Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and back home - Canada

9,805 kilometres later, we are back home

Whatever you drive, drive safe

Grateful to GOD for the journey!
